A contact sheet that looks fine on screen can be useless on paper: thumbnails too small to judge, filenames too small to read, or the edge frames clipped by the printer. Getting a good print comes down to three choices made before you press print: paper size, grid, and scaling.

1. Choose the paper size first

Decide the paper before you build the sheet, because the grid depends on it. Most digital contact sheets are printed on A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). Both fit any home or office printer and any folder. Traditional darkroom contact sheets used 8 × 10 inch photographic paper, which fits six strips of six 35mm frames.

ContactSheetMaker exports A4 PDFs at 300 DPI. If you print on US Letter, choose Fit to page in the print dialog. The page scales to about 94% with nothing cut off.

2. Pick a grid that stays readable on paper

Paper is less forgiving than a screen because nobody can zoom in. Use the table below to see how wide each thumbnail will print. The figures assume 15 mm margins and 5 mm gaps between frames.

Approximate printed thumbnail width by number of columns
ColumnsA4 landscapeA4 portraitLetter landscapeLetter portrait
386 mm (3.4 in)57 mm (2.2 in)80 mm (3.1 in)59 mm (2.3 in)
463 mm (2.5 in)41 mm (1.6 in)59 mm (2.3 in)43 mm (1.7 in)
549 mm (1.9 in)32 mm (1.3 in)46 mm (1.8 in)33 mm (1.3 in)
640 mm (1.6 in)26 mm (1.0 in)37 mm (1.5 in)27 mm (1.1 in)
829 mm (1.1 in)18 mm (0.7 in)27 mm (1.1 in)19 mm (0.7 in)

As a rule of thumb, keep thumbnails at least 40 mm (about 1.5 in) wide when a client is choosing between frames, and 50 mm or more when they are comparing faces. Smaller cells are fine for an archive index. The contact sheet templates guide gives a recommended grid for each type of shoot.

3. Make the filenames big enough to read

A printed caption below about 7 points is hard to read without a loupe. Use a medium font size for sheets of 12 frames or fewer and a small size for 20. Shorter filenames help more than bigger text, so a naming rule such as smith-wedding_014.jpg beats DSC_20260924_143512_0014.jpg. The file naming convention guide explains how to set one up, and the batch file renamer can apply it to a whole shoot at once.

4. Use images that are sharp enough, and no bigger

At 300 DPI, a 63 mm thumbnail needs about 750 pixels across. Exporting review copies at 1,500 to 2,000 pixels on the long edge is more than enough for any contact sheet, and it keeps uploads and PDFs small. Full resolution files make the PDF heavier without making the print sharper.

5. Set up the print dialog

  • Paper size: match the PDF (A4), or choose Letter and Fit to page.
  • Scale: Actual size or 100% when paper and PDF match; Fit to page when they do not.
  • Borderless: off. Borderless printing enlarges the page slightly and clips the outer frames.
  • Paper type and quality: set the paper type you loaded and a high quality mode. Plain paper settings on photo paper give muddy results.
  • Test first: print page one only, check it, then print the rest.

Which paper to use

Plain 80 to 100 gsm paper is fine for an internal reference or a shoot log. For a sheet a client will keep, use a heavier matte paper or matte photo paper. Matte avoids glare, shows shadow detail, and takes a pen or marker when people circle their picks. Gloss looks richer but smudges and reflects light when several people are looking at one print.

How to print a contact sheet from your phone

Open the PDF on your phone, tap Share, and choose Print. iPhones print to any AirPrint printer; Android phones use the built-in print service or the printer maker’s app. Choose the paper size, turn off borderless, and print.

How a darkroom contact print is made

If you shoot film and print in a darkroom, a true contact sheet is made without enlarging. Under safelight, place a sheet of photographic paper emulsion side up. Lay the negative strips emulsion side down on top, cover them with clean glass or a contact printing frame so they sit flat, and expose under the enlarger. Make a test strip first to find the exposure time, then develop, stop, fix, and wash as usual. Each frame on the print is exactly the size of the negative.

If you have scanned your film instead, the classic 35mm template reproduces the same six-by-six layout with a black background.

Build a print-ready sheet

Open the contact sheet editor, add the photos, choose the orientation and grid from the table above, keep filenames visible, and export the A4 PDF. Print page one, check it, and then print the full set. For the complete workflow, see how to make a contact sheet .

Frequently asked questions

What size is a contact sheet?

Digital contact sheets are usually printed on A4 or US Letter paper. Traditional film contact sheets were printed on 8 × 10 inch photographic paper, which holds a full roll of 35mm film.

What size are the photos on a contact sheet?

On a film contact sheet each frame is the same size as the negative: 24 × 36 mm for 35mm film. On a digital sheet it depends on the grid. Four columns across a landscape A4 page gives thumbnails about 63 mm wide.

What paper should I print a contact sheet on?

Plain 80 to 100 gsm paper is fine for internal reference. For client sheets, a heavier matte paper or matte photo paper gives better contrast without the glare of gloss, and it takes pen marks well.

How do I print a contact sheet from my phone?

Open the contact sheet PDF on your phone, tap Share, and choose Print. iPhones print to AirPrint printers and Android phones use the built-in print service. Set the paper size to A4 or Letter and turn off borderless printing.

Why is my printed contact sheet cut off at the edges?

Either the paper size in the print dialog does not match the PDF, or borderless printing is on. Choose the correct paper size, turn off borderless, and use Fit to page when printing an A4 sheet on Letter paper.
